Well this is my last post for the class.  It has been fun to keep a blog and reflect on my experiences in Finland.  I am not sure if I will continue to post to the blog in the future, but I know that I will reflect back on it and surely use it to show my children some of my experiences in college and Finland.  I have enjoyed the opportunity to practice writing, just as I have learned practice makes perfect.
It is hard to believe that the semester is already over.  It has flown by.  In some ways I wish it would continue because it has been fun, but I am very happy for the opportunity be able to catch up on some much needed sleep.  My Father in Heaven has blessed me beyond measure, especially to have been able to have a good job and go to a good school.  I am excited to see what the future holds!  Thank you for reading this blog and thank you to those who shared comments.  Enjoy life and take it one day at a time!
Thank you,
Andy

Post #19 My thoughts of conference/Minun ajatuksia konferensista

As I have been reflecting on conference I feel the need to let others know how great of a blessing it has been in my life.  Conference is so special because we have the opportunity to hear from God’s prophet and apostles.  We have a modern day Moses or even Noah on the earth today.  This is someone who can raise a warning voice to sin and give us the knowledge we need in order to face today’s trials and find happiness in our lives.
I enjoy preparing questions with the intent to find answers to as I listen to conference.  I don’t always expect to get an answer from the words that the speakers say.  Often it comes from feelings and thoughts that are given to me from the Holy Ghost.  The Holy Ghost has the ability to help us when we put ourselves in a position to be blessed, and listening to conference is definitely one of those positions.  By keeping a prayer in my heart and listening intently I have always been able to find answers to my questions, even if they were not the answers that I was expecting.
It is so great that the Lord loves us enough to bless us with an opportunity no matter where we are in the world to receive the words of a modern day prophet.  It is also a great blessing to have scripture, prayer, and the Holy Ghost to help us grow closer to him.  I love conference and am so happy to live in these special times.
The gospel is restored, and the church that Christ organized is again on the earth today.  The power by which miracles are preformed has also been restored to the earth.  We are living in a very blessed and special time.

Post #18 How Finnish has blessed my life/ Kuinka Suomen Kieltä on siunannut minun elämää

I am very grateful for the Finnish language.  I have been able to learn so much because of the opportunity I have had to learn Finnish.  Finnish first and foremost taught me that I can learn and do hard things.  I learned that if I just put the effort into it will be able to progress and succeed.  The Lord defiantly knew what He was doing when He called me to Finland.  Before I left on my mission I was very much the type that would quit something if I didn’t think I was good at it.  This was a devastating thing in my life because even though many things came naturally, I didn’t have the skills necessary to learn hard, new things.
When I entered the MTC I learned very quickly that speaking Finnish was hard.  I was not going to be able to be my usual self and quit because I really wanted to go to Finland and be an effective missionary.  Because I had desire I was able to buckle down and face the language head on.  It took many months of struggling before I finally felt like I could have a good conversation in Finnish.  By the end of my mission however, I was able to speak proficiently and help people learn the gospel in Finnish.  It was a huge blessing.
Finnish continues to bless my life.  I am still able to keep in contact with those that I came to love in Finland.  I also speak Finnish for my work, so I am able to keep up my language skills.  The job I have now has blessed my life immensely and I have it because I was called by a prophet of God to serve a mission in Finland.  I have now learned that I can learn and do hard things and I am so grateful for it!  I love Finnish!

Post # 17 General Conference Rhetorical Analysis

In class we were asked to do a rhetorical analysis on a talk from General Conference.  I have chosen to analyze Elder M. Russell Ballard's talk from priesthood session.  Elder Ballard is an excellent speaker who is very effective in rhetorical speaking.  Elder Ballard used three key forms of rhetoric that which I hope to briefly analyze.  First, Elder Ballard used imagery to describe how missionaries are called.  Second, he asked a large list of rhetorical questions that invited his audience to look within themselves.  Third, Elder Ballard showed his credibility by his word choice especially in the way he addressed his intended audience which helps him to connect with them.
Elder Ballard did an excellent job in describing how missionaries are individually called to serve in a specific field of labor.  One way which he expresses intimate imagery is when Elder Ballard describes what happens when they review a missionary's application.  In Elder Ballard's own words he says, "When your picture appears, we look into your eyes and review your answers to the missionary recommendation questions."  The way that he phrases this helps his audience to feel that he and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles really do take the time to get to know candidate spiritually and strive to receive revelation on the exact place where the missionary should be called.  I personally can testify that they are inspired because of the things I was able to learn and do in Finland.
Elder Ballard also invites his audience to look deep within themselves spiritually when he asks questions as if he were present in the room giving a personal interview.  He uses rhetorical questions such as "Do you search the scriptures regularly?" and "Do you kneel in prayer to talk with your Heavenly Father each morning and each night?"  He goes on to ask many more rhetorical questions all of which are intended to help his audience search deep within themselves.  Though Elder Ballard may not be able to be physically present with each individual in his audience, his questions are very effective in helping him to get his point across and allow his audience to recognize ways in which they can progress spiritually.
Finally, Elder Ballard uses appropriate word choice to show his ethos and also to connect with his audience.  He uses proper grammar and pronunciation that helps his audience to feel his dignity.  He also uses appropriate words and phrases that bring him closer to his audience.  For example he does not just simply say how some forms of social media can be destructive; rather he calls specific forms out by name such as "Tinder" and "Snapchat."  This increases his ethos because it shows that he knows what he is talking about and give his audience specific examples of how people need to be careful and aware of what they are doing with these apps.  This leaves no room for discrepancy or false justification of poor use for his audience.
In conclusion Elder Ballard, along with the other speakers in conference, is a rhetorical genius.  He clearly depicts how missionaries are called helping us to feel the personal love he has for each missionary.  He also provides excellent questions which help each member of his audience look deep within themselves spiritually and also allows the spirit to help each person know how he or she can improve and come unto Christ.  He then increases his ethos by using proper diction and word choice which allows him to connect with and identify with his audience.  Elder Ballard is truly a great speaker and an amazing servant of the Lord.  It is no wonder why he was called to be a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.  I invite everyone to give a listen to his talk which he gave in April 2015 General Priesthood Session.

What a wonderful Friday it was!  I got to go to the Finnish mission reunion with my wife and enjoy time with people I had served with and see Finns from my last ward I served in before I same home.  It was very special.  We had many special speakers there, two of which were of the first missionaries after World War II to go to Finland and preach the gospel in the Finnish language.  Both men brought a special spirit and the stories they told really helped me to be more appreciative of my time in Finland.  When they started they only had one member in Helsinki, who had been introduced to the church and baptized in Sweden and then moved back to Finland.  Now there are two stakes in Finland and 3 districts.  There is also a temple.  The work form those missionaries really did start the ball rolling for Finland.  I am grateful to have heard their stories.  It helped me to remember and understand a little better that we may not always know how serving God will affect others, but eventually our labors will bring forth fruit.  I am very thankful for the opportunity I had to be able to serve my mission in such an amazing country where the legacy of those who went before me is so strong.
