Post #11 Look Sister Steadman No Hands. Research Blog.

When I started in on my research paper which is about one of my ancestors who was an indentured servant when the Pilgrims came to America, I had the thought to compare how being an indentured servant was a lot like slavery.  But now that I have started to research this topic I have found that unlike slavery people would put themselves into indentured servitude in order to better their situation.  I have found that a better comparison is indenture servitude compared to going into debt to pay for school.  This is also much more applicable to my current situation.
Why would anyone want to put themselves into indentured servitude then or now?
The idea of achieving something better has always been common in humanity; most of us strive to better our situation.  People who were indentured servants saw America as a modern day college student who is in debt sees a degree.  It is an opportunity to make something more of themselves.  Both indentured servants and in debt college students take a loan to get them to their new destination and end up working even after they achieve their goal in order for them to pay off the debt.
Why does this matter?
By understanding why people make sacrifices and put themselves in debt to achieve something better we can grow a greater appreciation for what we do have and also learn how to make sacrifices ourselves.  We can learn that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that through hard work we can do something great.  I am grateful that my ancestor made that sacrifice which helped to lead my family to the great nation that is America!
It seems to me that.....
